Vane is a Westerly, meaning he can control the West Winds. Audra describes him as having a hint of boyishness in him. With his looks and amazing personality, he ends up getting Audra's love. He is very handsome and athletically fit. Vane loves his adoptive family very much, but never changed his last name, Weston, simply because he didn't want his name to be mispronounced as "Vane Brassiere", and because he wanted something to remember from his past. From then on, he was searched for and chased after by Raiden and his Stormers, so they could obtain the power of commanding all four winds. After Vane's parents died in a horrific storm and Vane being the only person in his family to survive along with Audra and her mother, Arella, he was named " the boy who survived" and was soon adopted by his current family, the Brasiers. Audra's family was Vane's family's guardians. Vane's family used to be the only living group of Westerlies left. He proves this throughout the books when he does many dangerous things to protect Audra and his family. Like Audra, Vane will stop at nothing to protect his friends and family. He isn't afraid to say the first thing on his mind, and this can be both a strength and a weakness at times. Vane is very confident, especially when joking and talking with his friends and family. ![]()

The description of the event was interesting, but Nasaw totally missed the deep scar that it left on the nation for decades and decades to come. I'm not an expert on Andrew Carniegie, but I was let down when Nasaw didn't go into in any depth the long lasting and deep affect the Homestead strike had on the nation as a whole. On one hand, what a better way to tell about Carnegie than using his own words, especially since since he speechified and wrote a lot, including an autobiography? On the other hand, the quotes quickly became tedious to read. I'm somewhat ambivalent about Nasaw's frequent use of extended quotes from Andrew Carnegie. In many sections I felt the writing lacked depth, particularly with respect to what was going on around Carnegie. Instead of an analysis of Carnegie, we get a book report. Unfortunately, the author never gives the reader a basic understanding of who Carnegie was and what motivated him, what themes are a constant in his life and help the reader feel like he knows the subject, like Ron Chernow does with Rockefeller. ![]() David Nasaw's book on Andrew Carnegie was one of the more frustrating books I've read in a while. ![]() ![]() You could really feel the authenticity of everything even while this was a fictional story.
